I don't believe there is a proposal to widen Ashley River Rd. There is discussion to extend Glenn McConnell and have it parallel Ashley River Rd up to the Bacon Bridge Rd area. It will be years and years before this happens though.
Yeah you're right about that. If you've lived here long enough, you'd know Ashley River Road will never be widen. Fights about that was hot and heavy back in the 70's and 80's before Cantrell was built.
"extend the Glenn McConnell Parkway from where it ends now at Bees Ferry Road in West Ashley to Interstate 26 in Ridgeville. The road, which the Chamber calls the Outer Loop, would run roughly parallel to I-26.'
Ah yes, so not widening Ashley River Road, but cutting a new highway thru the forest over there. At any rate, there's no money for all of these projects. They are not going to spend a Million Dollars a Mile (which is what these major road jobs cost) to fix a problem that lasts 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening rush. Any of these choke points are clear the rest of the day.
I wouldn't be opposed to raising the Gas Tax a nickel a gallon -- and dedicating the entire amount to road projects IN THIS AREA. I don't want to hand over a big slush fund to Columbia. Spend the money here. Myrtle Beach has made very good use of the "flyovers" at congested intersections. Perhaps that could be done to avoid all the traffic lights that jam us up down here.

Law does not permit local government levying gasoline taxes so any increase would go to Columbia to dole out. Didn't SC just recently increase gasoline taxes?
I don't think any states allow local governments to levy gasoline taxes.
I wasn't asking for a "local" gas tax levy, just a commitment to use the additional money raised in this area, where most of the tourism dollars are spent. Tourism is a $19 Billion Industry, a large part of it is generated along the Coast. Let's keep the tax dollars in the area that produces the most money.
The State Government just went into DefCon1 just to get a 2 cent increase in the gas tax -- WTF is 2 cents going to do for the problem. I was recently up North, and the price of Regular gas was $2.55 - $2.60 in all of those states, while down here it's still in the $2.30 range. We have the lowest State Gas Tax levy in the Nation, and when you cross the border into the Palmetto State....the roads immediately show it !!

Both Ashley River Road in WA and Mathis Ferry in Mt Pleasant used to hold some type of scenic highway designation. So they basically were boxed out of cutting more tress/widening/etc. I do not know if that is still the case.
Charleston is going to have to get on top of traffic soon. I think finishing 526, extending McConnell up to Summerville and figuring additional WA to North Charleston and Mt Pleasant to Goose Creek links are the minimum. The current traffic situations are really killing livability for too many people.

Mr. Peatie,
You should be on the legislature or County Council here, as you have wisdom that does not seem to exist with our current and past government leaders in Charleston. I consider leaving the area too, but have family here, and cannot leave anytime soon...

It’s going up 2 cents a year for six years to produce between $105-120 mil a year for each 2 cent increase. When it’s over the state will have between $630-720 mil a year to spend on roads.
A few years ago some upset citizen put blue painters tape on the brown sign designating Mathis Ferry Road as a "Scenic Highway."
The sign then read"X Scenic Highway." Sad but almost true.
