Folly Beach trying to ban business chains. This sounds like something straight out of California and I doubt this new ordinance could stand up in court if challenged.

Folly Beach to consider ban on chain businesses

Why let the market decide based on goods and services offered?

Kudos to them. Why do we need chains here? Local business with Local character is much better. Folly Beach <> Myrtle Beach

Yep. They like their honky tonk atmosphere and work hard to keep it that way. It is a fun, wacky relief from all the other beach towns.

Same old ridiculous trope about government. Yay corporate homogenization of local culture. Woohoo! Another Cheesecake Factory!

You can dislike chains but still think it should be up to the market to support one or not

It's been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that "the market" you speak of does not have the best interest of people in mind.

Keep Folly Weird.

Most of the stores on Folly are already chains. They just aren't fast food chains.. Are they going to shut down Taco Boy who's owner owns about 20 restaurants? There's already a BP station, and a Subway, and both of those would have to be grandfathered in. They need to be careful though, vacation property management companies like Avocet and Windham Resorts will have to take their business elsewhere. Carolina One and Dunes Properties would be at risk. I just hope they take a good look at how this will affect the current state of business there and whether a mom and pop store can bring the same levels of stability and service. There needs to be some very specific language included to make sure that "chain" business affects all chain business or just certain ones. Very interesting indeed. I'll be watching how this unfolds for sure.
