Is the Pope Catholic? "The Bible Belt" is made up of the people who live there. Charleston has a large population "from off", so it's not the same "bible belt" it was 30 years ago, I'm sure, but you'll still see plenty of things closed on Sundays, Church is a very large part of Charleston society, etc.
Watching Cash Cab the other night on the Discovery Channel, and the clue was "Sometimes called Chuck Town, this Southern City is also known by its nickname as the Palmetto City." I was stunned for a second. Pretty sure the nickname for good old Chuck Town is the HOLY CITY. Somebody read the memo wrong!
Yeah, the Bible Belt still runs through the Holy City.
I'm (personally) not seeing it... I've asked around for church recommendations and have found very few people that go. The few that I've met that do, don't seem very excited about it. People were much more excited about church in Indiana than they are down here, again, from what I've seen.

It depends on where you live down here. I don't think you see it as much in Mt. Pleasant, but downtown, James Island, and Johns Island tend to be mostly locals and you will find a larger percentage who are active members of a church.
(Just my opinion here) I think people try to downplay their Christianity to folks they don't know well because we tend to be made fun of for being "radical Christians", for "clinging to our Bibles", and are called "holy rollers", etc. by people in other parts of the country. Like yourself, though, we are just Christians who love the Lord and like the fellowship with other Christians that we get at church. I am excited about church and more so about God, as are the other Christians I know.... we are just not overly demonstrative about it so as not to perpetuate that Southern stereotype.
I hope you were able to find a church you like.
To the OP: Yes, Charleston is definitely in the Bible Belt.

.
This is a very interesting perspective on the topic.
And this is not directly aimed at you of course, but I have noticed a lot of southerner's being very aware of the stereotypes about them.
Wow, I didn't think what I said was cause for a debate.
And I even prefaced it with 'this is not aimed at you OF COURSE.' I've been on the board awhile as so has SCBeaches and we have never had a problem and I am not looking to start one now which I thought was obvious.
Everyone has a reputation, from the Northeast, from the South, from the Midwest, from the West Coast, from the North Pacific area, from Canada, from Europe, from EVERYWHERE. We all have 'ideas' of what those people are like from different areas. I just mentioned that I think it is strange how southern people are so aware of it and often so concerned by it. Yet, many southerner's are guilty of imposing those prejudices on people from other areas.
I don't even know what many of the Californian stereotypes are, and I don't care. I'm sure I fit some of them, and I'm sure some of them fit a very small percentage of people in the area.
Again, that was not directed at SCBEACHES. I was just reminded of this thought.
And yeah, I do think it's strange. It is strange that we a) have these stupid pigeonholes for people b) expect them to live up to them and then when they do we complain c) get mad when we are stereotyped.
It's all stupid really.
