Anyone in need of upbeat, fun, and hardworking employee?
In process of relocating (if I ever get this lake home sold...)to the greater Charleston, SC, area and want a job. Retired from public education last May and could return if I get SC certificate, but would like something different, upbeat, and fun. Not ruling out public education, but would like checking out options for spreading my wings.
Am: excellent writer, editor, proofreader, love computers, people, animals, many forms of design, training specialist in nearly any field (I can teach anyone anything).
If you want to go back into public ed, the spring is the best time to start looking, contracts are expected back early in May so Principals can figure out how many people they will need to hire for the next year, they normally start interviews by the end of the school year and carry them through the summer. You need to go through the school district office in order to interview at a school.
I'm a 25-year veteran teacher who also loves writing and have written columns in the past for local papers and a magazine, so we have a lot in common. Ideas: try to get on with a small local paper like the James Island Journal or a local magazine such as Lowcountry Parent or Skirt. Another suggestion is getting a job in the tourist industry, which is almost a sure thing. You could use your skills at the Children's Museum, at one of the local plantations, the Charleston Museum, become a tour guide (requires studying for and taking a test), work with school groups at the Provost Dungeon and Old Exchange, etc. You have very marketable skills and they would be put to good use in a field involving children, journalism, or working with the public....pay won't be as good (and no benefits) as with the public schools, but you'll meet lots of people and have a lot of fun! Good luck! I'll be joining you out there in 5 more years!
Thanks for the pep-talk; I'll keep all the good advice in mind. I do know I'll do better benefits-wise teaching, but really want to do something else. Keep me in mind, Orange County Girl, if your receptionist skips...

You had lots of concrete ideas I'll look at. It seems most of those would be better handled there in person.
