Hi there. My family and I are moving to Charleston next month for my husband's new job. He is commuting from Columbia right now. We have a 10-year-old with special educational needs. Where are the best schools at in the area? Her current SE teacher suggested Dorchester County 2 Schools. I have also heard good things about James Island and Mount Pleasant. We are kind of restricted on how much we can afford to spend per month on rent, so Mount Pleasant is pretty much out of the question; but what about other areas? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, any cheap temporary lodging for my husband so he doesn't have to drive so far everyday until we move? Thanx.

Summerville would be best I believe, plus it cuts down your husbands commute by 45 minutes!

A hotel in Summerville can run between 80 and 100 a day, not sure what he is paying for gas right now but that may be an option....

There is are a couple of extended stays in North Charleston that aren't in that great of areas but they are cheaper....

I would also suggest Summerville and Dorchester District2 schools. There are plenty of homes for rent or sale. Is it possible to move ahead earlier and get your housing lined up (if you are simply renting) and your husband could start living there? I think you'll find it cheaper than staying in a hotel for days on end. (10 days in a hotel ata$100/day=one months rent) I have a home for rent right now for $900 - 3/2, 1250 sq ft in DD2. (Spann Elementary) I'll private message you the information.
Sincerely,
Foster Smith

I think I neglected to mention in my original post that my husband is working in downtown Charleston, so we are looking to get as close to his work and still be in DD2 district. I think that will be the best option for us, but I still worry about the commute.

My recommendation is when you find a place to rent for him to make the commute to and from downtown during the times he will be going to and coming from work. If it's between 6:15-8:30am and 3:30-6:00pm he will be in heavy traffic.....Unless that doesn't bother him.

Thank you all for your helpful replies. TomCat, is Windsor Hill a nice neighborhood? What about the apartment complexes in that area?

I wouldn't stay in any of the appartments in that area, but Windsor Hill is pretty nice....
