My guess is it's partially because the pay rate is too low. I was "making" more on UE than that job pays. For a lot of people casually looking for jobs, they're going to weigh whether or not they're going to lose money by taking a job.

Well, at least we know why he's having a hard time finding people...

"Long said his selection process includes a drug screen and background check. And he expects his employees to have a clean and professional appearance, which weeds some applicants out."

What's a professional appearance for a roofer?

This, this, or this,
maybe even this if the client prefers (but you have to pay extra for the view), .

Working on a high roof in 90-degree weather during the middle of the day ... for $10 an hour ???

Not me ! I'm afraid of heights.

The article is a bit disingenuous as I am sure the point of it over all was to comment on the possibility of congress extending unemployment benefits again, which the paper seems to be agains.

I looked up what jobs this company was offering and if you look closely at what he stated then yes. They have a couple of positions open where one can start at the bottom of the ladder to learn how to do HVAC installs. For the sheet metal roofing jobs, they are doing a national employment search for those positions because they are requiring experienced commercial sheet metal roofers. That shortfall has nothing to do with what was implied.

Thanks for the post. They are not only looking for roofers, but also AC installers. One of my friends is going to apply since he just got his heat and AC degree. Hey, if you need a job, you need a job...something is better than nothing if you don't have one.
