Thanks! the dilema I have right now is that the construction company in my community does not have professional installers and they are installing the hardi plank like it was wood and with wrong nails. Very poor labor job and that is probably why most of the houses around the community hardi plank is cracking and falling. The woork is so bad, that when we have hard winds, some of the boards are falling.

The sad part, I don't we are going to be able to get any warranty on the hardi plank, because I really believe is an installation issue. So, if I wanted fix, I will have to pay for it. Sad, when this only a 4.5 year old house and hardy should last for 20 or 30 years, if done right. But, construction company don't care, since the labor warranty is only one year and the issue did not show until three years later.

We're building a house- and I got on the builder about this right when the siding was delivered to the job site.

I sent the installation guide to the builder and called him and explained how important this is.

He got the point, but I'm going to the job site and check the installer's work before they get too far along.

If this is the stuff that was once commonly referred to as masonite, then it should last forever if installed properly and maintained. It's a much better alternative than vinyl siding as it has mass (sound insulation) and it can be painted.

No, no, no.... masonite is/was a brand (manufacturer) of hardboard siding. Hardie Plank is a brand (manufacturer) of fiber cement siding.

Hardboard siding had massive failures back in the 1980s (at least in the southeast US)... due to humidity... heard stories of mushrooms growing on the board!
