Where can I rent an ozone generator to eliminate cigarette odor? (renter, house)

We have a rental property and our renter smoked either cigarettes or something else against our agreement. he somehow masked the odor when I would visit. Well he skipped town and now we're left with smoke odor that reaks! We've replaced the carpet, painted the walls, left out vinegar, bought chemicals, and neutralizers.....nothing works.

It looks like our last option is to rent an ozone generator. Has anyone done this before and/or could tell me what businesses rent these machines out or provide ozone treatment service?

Have you had your ductwork cleaned? Lots of smoke and stuff gets in there. You get the tar on the dust in the ducts and it just hangs there. A good company should be in and out in an hour or so and you will have clean ducts as well.

Maybe think about finding a way to get Febreeze into a fine mist and shoot a bunch of it into the air return to see if that helps.


As far as an ozone generator, I have no clue where to get one.

I had to use one for a listing of mine, I ended up getting it through the carpet cleaning company.

You can call a fire and water damage company and they should have ozone generators to remove smoke odor. I did this at a house a few years ago and it removed the tobacco odor. You must remove all organic matter (plants, pets, and people) and open all your cupboards in the bathrooms and kitchen, as well as all closet doors. They recommended running the ceiling fans as well to help disperse the ozone.

As a landlord I was in constant need of one. I bought mine for about $375 and it works like a dream. In fact, even if the previous tenant was a pig, smoked 3 packs a day, crack addict mixing his own, 6 dogs not being walked....after 2-3 days with one of those machines...place smelled like a rose garden.

We had a property that a tenant damaged while using the fireplace-smoke smell in everything-carpet, furniture, curtains, EVERYTHING.

We called around to a couple restoration companies and were able to rent one from Built Restoration
(704) 604 0245 -it was pretty easy to use (essentially plug it in and leave asap) and they also had industrial fans that you also need to help push the ozone throughout the house.

Hope I never have to use it again but I can say that it did work-

Some years ago I rented one from a home health store. I cannot recall the name. They had all kinds of hospital type beds and equipment. Some homebound patients have an unpleasant odor from their difficulties and the ozone machine does the trick. I used it because of a stove top fire that left smoke smell everywhere.
I was also told that auto renting agencies and car dealers use them as well for the same reason.

Another possible source......Funeral homes use them to clean the air when a body has been in closed room or house for a while.

Yes, I have used ozone two times at two different properties to eliminate cigarette odor and it worked. You must remove all organic matter such as plants, animals, and people. Leave open all your cabinets. You can call fire and water damage companies and ask them if they have that service. I apologize I cannot remember which companies I used but both times it was for 48 hours. Hope this helps.
