Savannah, GA. I simply love this city. I'd live there if I could afford to be in the Historic District (which I can't, sadly).

What more could you ask for?

+1 for beach camping at Hunting Island. Can't beat falling asleep under the stars with the sounds of waves crashing.

Great list lovesMountains!! My DH only has 1 weekend off a month so we usually try to do something as a family that weekend...your list gives me great ideas for places to visit. We also like going to Myrtle Beach. I've never been to the Outerbanks yet, but it's definitely on the top of my list of places to visit! I've also heard of great things about Wilmington. Being fairly new to the area, there is still so much to explore...I love, love, love living here because there's so many beautiful places to visit within driving distance!

Here are a few more bike trails to consider:

--the New River Trail: It's an old railroad bed like the Virginia Creeper Trail, but it's much closer--just over the VA line off of I-77. New River Trail State Park

--Watuaga River Road at Valle Crucis, NC: A country road that follows the beautiful Watuaga River through some nice farmland. It's only about 5-6 miles, but it's a fun ride. No web site that I could find, but here's a review that has directions and a little more info. Note that this is a mountain bike site, so the trail is rated low just because it's a road bike destination. Watauga River Road Trail Reviews

--Railroad Grade Road between Todd and Fleetwood, NC (near Boone): Also a converted railroad bed, in fact it's the same rail line as the Virginia Creeper Trail. See North Carolina: Todd/Fleetwood Area

I like the New River Trail, but it just doesn't compare to the Virginia Creeper in terms of scenery in my opinion

But Galax, where the New River Trail begins (or ends!) is a great little town to visit. Anybody going should not miss eating at Flossies on Grayson St

I agree, LM...the Creeper Trail is much more scenic, but it takes a lot longer to get there.

Dupont State Forest, about 2 1/2 hours away, near Asheville. There are several great waterfalls with swimming holes, plus a TON of hiking biking trails. All the trails loop around a lot, so you can do roundtrip hikes/bikes as short or long as you like!

I've been wanting to go beach camping. I'm guessing Hunting Island would be the best place to go to then? But looking at their website it looks as if each camp site is right on top of the other. Is that really how it is, someone else's tent about a foot away from mine? I understand that I'm not going to be all alone out by the ocean, but I do want a little bit of space between my sleeping spot and some strangers.
