My husband and I are thinking about relocating to Gastonia. Can anyone give me any info on the town? Is there a bad section we should avoid? How are the schools? Thanks..Joyce

I live in Kings Mountain & am in & out of Gastonia all of the time. Schools are best in the SE corner of Gastonia. Look for Forestview High School. The best schools feed to Forestview. Avoid Huss High School.
Are you interested in any other towns in the area or just Gastonia? Will the job be in Gastonia?

I have been to Gastonia for tennis matches(Southampton and Gastonia CC) and basketball games. Just on my visits I would agree that the SE Gastonia area has some nice residential areas. I would also have to say there are many undesireablr areas in Gastonia and must say I have run into...let's just say 'interesting people' in some of these undesirable areas. I can't forget the time last Spring Break on my way to vacation I stopped at a McDonald's in Gastonia and a lady in a car next to me had a pet goat in front seat...with a diaper on..

What it boils down to is, if schools are involved Huss is to be avoided, so all areas feeding to Huss are avoided, & some of those neighborhoods are nice, if you don't have a need for schools.
Over the years, I've seen a wide variety of animals in people's cars. I've seen quite a few diapered, which seems like a good idea to me, considering the alternative. There's countryside around all of these towns & some peoplle have farms. I've seen nubian goats on some lots. Was there a reason for pointing this out?

Usually, around here, I see animals in the back of pickups (w/or w/out diapers). I've mostly seen assorted diapered animals in South Jersey, although I've seen a few in Philadelphia.
Maybe the woman had to take the goat to a vet's office & stopped for lunch.
I know where the bad area in Gastonia is & it's nowhere near the SE corner. There's a couple of areas that are a bit run-down, but the city is working on it. They're also working on the downtown & they are getting some good businesses in. The object of the game out here is to get a variety of businesses in so that they never have to deal with a near collapse of the economy again, like what happened with the mills.

LOL, that must have been quite the site! But strange stuff can happen anywhere.
Personally, I would not have been able to resist, I would have HAD to have asked the lady what THAT was all about!

Thanks! I've heard nothing good about that school, from the natives, however, it is no longer the only game in town. I'm sure that people have gone through Huss & gone to college & been successful, but when life-long natives don't have a good word for it, I take that seriously.
I try to tell the truth, including the warts. As new businesses are brought in out here, the towns will be able to address other issues, & as people get back to work, they will have the money to fix things up.
In the 10+years that I have lived near Gastonia, it has improved greatly. I am in Gastonia everyday (although I live in Charlotte) because my children attend school there (Gaston Day). We are considering moving closer to the school and are looking at Belmont/Cramerton/SE Gastonia areas. BTW-there's a new high school under construction between Belmont & Cramerton (Lakewood? Lakeview?)
WA Bess Elem seems to be the ones everyone says is great, and New Hope Elem seems to get good reviews by the people who attend there. Also Belmont Central Elem.
There are quite a few Christian schools in the area and Gaston Day School.
