Anybody know of a good place within an hour or two of charlotte to go camping that's not a "campground", you know not a place with mowed grass and picnic tables every 30 ft.? I go to uwharrie sometimes, and i love it there, but im looking somewhere with a nice stream/lake/river to jump in since its starting to get to hot to camp without one. Any body know of one? Ive heard that there is some spots in uwharrie, but all ive ever seen is little streams, not much to hang out and swim in.
This is a campground, but a very tolerable campground. It has a great lake, with a swimming area, and tons of hiking trails! The elevation generally keeps the temperature 5-10 degrees cooler than here. Enjoy!

Check out the South Carolina lake area (Hartwell, Jacosse (?sp),Keowee. South Carolina does not seem to be as strict as NC is about swimming in their lakes.
Swimming is absolutely allowed. We've been swimming here several times. They have a schedule on the right side of the website, about 3/4 of the way day. I agree, SC is generally much less restrictive on their swimming policies than NC is.
Out of curiosity, I checked availability for 4th of July weekend, and they had availability for standard camp sites, primitive campsites, and a few open cabins. For $21 a night, you cant beat the value!
You might want to check out South Mountains State Park. It's a great park about an hours drive from Charlotte, it only has primitive camping, trails up into the mountain with waterfalls, and you can swim in the water if you like. There is also a reservoir there too. It's relatively unknown so it's not very crowded.
Wilson's Creek area of Pisgah National Forest. You have a "developed" campground in Mortimer, or you can just camp off the Forest Service roads. Under 2 hours from Charlotte and you can make it as primitive as you like. For hiking you'll want to buy the National Geographic Linville Gorge/Mount Mitchell topo map. Have fun if you go up there. Wilson's Creek is a nice area that not alot of people know about.
Edit: Much better swimming options in this area as well compared with South Mountains State Park (really only a couple good spots there, both are "posted" as no swimming). Numerous holes in Wilson creek gorge area (careful of undertows, popular area with Kayakers, pool below Huntfish Falls, nice area with lots of auger holes on Gragg Prong, big hole at Harper Creek Falls. Just be careful as this is a rather remote area, and doesn't see much traffic through the week especially.
We have taken our scouts to Stone Mountain Park in Elkin. They have primitive camping and lots of places to get in the water. Also check out Brown Mountain in Collettsville.
