I see the OP is in Vermont so I want to mention that the rural roads in this state have very little if any shoulder compared to New England. I do ride on Charlotte's quieter streets and those with bike lanes, but would never ride on a 2-lane rural road here (as I used to when I lived in western Mass)
There are many issues with the bike lanes here: They're few and far between, they begin & end unexpectedly, and worse yet - they seem to be treated like trash lanes. There's more debris in the bike lanes than in the rest of the roads. They also tend to put the caps and other things in the pavement that cause deep divots and holes to avoid in the bike lanes. So I find them nearly useless.
