We're relocating to huntersville, and although I did a watch dog search on the general area and was rather pleased, especially coming from central Florida, We still didn't have an exact location. We're relocating with a job transfer and had to act rather quickly. Just learned that the community we'll be living in has 1 registered male sex offender-victim age was 14 at the time. I already will be locating the home once I get there and making sure my kids stay clear from the home. Question is, I know the development probably doesn't care/think to even do back ground checks but do you feel something should be in place when living in a community that notifies residents that a sex offender resides within the community? Perhaps will deter them from wanting to move to a "family" community with an abundance of children. We have pools, parks etc., we want our children to be safe and not preyed upon. Should I bring this to the board to see if their is a policy in place or just stay clear and do my regular watch dog checks from time to time?

Just really frustrated, as we're leaving a state with the number 1 rating in most sex offenders...was really hoping not to have to have one 2 streets away.

Thanks.

Keep in mind that there are reasons for being registered as a sex offender that in no way could ever impact your family. Blindly going after this person or others who may end up in your neighborhood could cause problems for everyone concerned.

I know, you are correct, but awareness is also key as well. I don't think it helped watching the Jaycee Duggard interview today either. :/ I'll probably just keep the info to myself for now until I get situated and get a feel for the community and see if I feel comfortable asking about it. thanks!

You're welcome. I'm all for protecting the kids but some things need to be handled properly. Good luck with your new home.

Anyone with children, up through H.S. age should be aware of who or what lives in their neighborhood or nearby. If you check the NC registry, you will find there are few areas of the county and surrounding area that does not have a registered offender within a mile or even closer. Awareness is the key word.

I would be cautious with this list, while some are legitimately sex offenders someone can be put on this list for absolutely the most ridiculous things.

I am not sure if you are buying a home or renting an apartment but apartments do background checks, for all other purposes there is the registry for people to check. We do not need more big brother.

I don't know that it is legal to discriminate against a renter due to being on the sex offender registry. Of course, there are legal ways to discriminate...

As others said, some people are on their for ridiculous reasons, like urinating in an alley. Hey, sometimes you gotta go and you don't want to pee your Lee's.

Not discriminate, but have a notice posted within the community or a binder with the information for resident's to view as they wish. Just looking to see if any communities have anything in place concerning notifying residents of registered sex offenders residing in the community. thanks
