Long time area resident here... Lived off of Brawley School Rd for a time and I've watched the point and peninsula both be built.
If commute isn't a factor I'd vote with the point by a long shot. Bigger homes, bigger lots, more rural, cleaner air, less (neighborhood) traffic and nicer amenities, golf course aside. Not even close to me. In my book Cornelius is terrible.
Peninsula is certainly older ("Oh, our kids are your age!"). My wife and I are 33 and the youngest in the 'hood that we've come across. We hang out a lot at the Pirate Ship Park by the Yacht Club (a very short walk) and have met many great families and other kids - some lifelong friends for sure. Duck feedings at the PYC, etc....plenty to do.
As for the older folks, I believe it attracted many retirees in the mid-90s when it was built and they are now tired of taking care of their big homes and downsizing. The turnover is bringing a lot of families, esp from the NE and MW. With so many transplants, everyone is welcoming.
I'm assuming you have kids since you mention schools. Jetton Park is another great option and Davidson & H-ville have several great parks our kids frequent. Most parents give the public schools a go, but always have a backup in case it doesn't work out. Both the Yacht Club and Peninsula Club have pools and a ton of kids to meet there as well. We belong to neither (kids are 1.5 & 3.5) and have a summer membership to Jetton Cove pool for the season (much more cost efficient if you aren't going to use the clubs year round).
Hope that helps. Traffic isn't bad. It's 35 min to the airport as I mention and 15 min to about everything else you'll need. Many have moved up here from CLT/southside who knowingly opt in to the rush hour commute downtown (lots of folks that work for BOA, etc.). Moving from downtown Chi, we thought we'd go crazy in the 'burbs and being 25 min from a city, but truely enjoy it and rarely find reason to hit the city (costco, TJ's, concerts in NoDa).
Choose "Find a Home" and then you can type a subdivision name.
Currently there are 59 homes for sale in The Peninsula (up since my last post) and 70 homes for sale in The Point (down since my last post). So yeah - still plenty of "million dollar homes" to choose from. The real question is who is going to buy them.
We only live in The Point during the summers so I can't comment on the schools. What no one else has mentioned that I find odd is the lake temperature. Before moving to the Point we docked our boat in the southern area of the lake, now we're pretty far north. The lake temperature is a lot cooler the further north you go. Between hot days and the nuclear plant heating up the lake water, it can seem like bath water the further south you go. So depending on if you plan to use the lake, I think it is something to consider.

Huh? On the lake, The Peninsula and The Point are on either side of the Davidson Creek Branch. About 3 miles from each other.

It's my opinion, and its based on decades of living in and around there. Your mileage may vary, if so you should post up your opinion rather than some dot:dubious smart-alecky emoticon.
