Longtime Charlotte residents probably remember WGIV from back in the day on AM. They added an FM signal in 2009 and played mostly Gospel with some old school R&B mixed in. A few months back they switched to all old school Hip-Hop. I’m really liking the new format. This article below doesn’t mention it, but they play mostly old Hip Hop now and even call themselves “The Adult Hip-Hop Station”. They’re an independent station too, so they mix it up a lot with other formats like Reggae. This is the kind of station Charlotte’s needed on FM for a while.
I'll check it out for sure. I'm a big hip-hop fan but can't stand most of the crap that comes out today. I mostly avoid the radio altogether but will give this a shot. Hopefully lots of good early-mid 90s stuff.
In the 70's the WGIV DJ's called it "the black spot on the dial". I would listen to it now & then for that good ole Motown sound. I'm too old for that hippity-hop stuff......
Haha, I remember WGIV in those days. Interestingly WPEG wasn't a Black station then. It was a dance station. It went to R&B after Disco died in like one day and all the White people burned all their disco records. R&B was the only way to have a dance format.
There was also a daytime only AM station that did dance in the 70s called Daylight 15. Don't remember the call letters.
WBT and WAYS were the two big pop stations on the AM dial.

.
There was also WIST-AM station, which was also very popular in the 70's. Could that be the one? I certainly remember Jay Thomas on BIG WAYS. Ahhhh, memory lane again....
