I was born in Salisbury, NC, in '71 and my family moved to SE Charlotte in '74.
Besides college and a few jobs I have basically lived within several miles of Southpark mall my entire life.
Fast forward to 2007.
Wife and I have two daughters (private school) and live in Beverly Crest (since 1999).
We love our home but are starting to seriously look at options.
The problem is that we honestly like nothing that we can find and do not want to be be any further out that we are right now. Inside 485 a must, inside Hwy 51 if possible.
Tract housing has just run rampant, IMHO, and we have no desire for a McMansion.
Ideally we would like something like a Dwell Home (smart modern modular) and can spend up to $500K or so.
Check out this website: ModernCharlotte.com - Mid Century Modern. Listings are rare, but you may want to contact the agent, perhaps she knows of properties that aren't listed yet. I've emailed her and she's very responsive.
I'm looking for the same style of home, but my budgets a little lower. I would like to find a fixer-upper in a nice area and do the work myself.
I have land near Highway 16/73 that you could "build" your modular home.
