I read in a few threads that majority of the homes in Charlotte dont have a basement.
If that is the case.. where do people put their home theater system, a home gym or a pool table or a bar.

My home theater system is setup in my living room. I do not want a home gym or a pool table. I keep my alcohol in a kitchen cabinet or in the fridge. I don't need to take refuge from the wife. She doesn't bug me.
Home theater in the living room, extra bedroom for work out space, and "refuge" to the garage or out at my horse barn. House isn't huge, but it is big enough to make it all work.
Not many basements, but lots of houses being built now with a nice sized bonus room above the garage. Have my entertainment system and office desk up there. Homebrew beer out of the bonus room bathroom. Used to put some exercise equipment in an extra bedroom, but that's a nursery now. Got a gym membership instead. For $20/month I really prefer having the extra space the exercise bike/Total Gym took up. Plus I have access to much better (and varied) equipment.
Since we could not find a house with a proper basement here, we made it a point to look for a house with a large bonus room that would serve the same purpose as a basement in a home up north. In our case, one of the reasons we bought the home we did was because the first floor was primarily a very large, single room which we were able to wire for surround sound and use as a media room (so I could avoid having a TV in my living room).
Essentially, down here a "bonus room" is a basement that isn't underneath the house.
My home theater is in my living room; it consists of a couch that's seen better days and an old TV on a TV stand, with the DVR and DVD player precariously perched on a shelf beneath the TV, and the XBOX and Wii on a bookshelf right beside the TV stand.
The gym is the carpeted space right in front of the TV.
Home theater in family room.
Gym in guest bedroom. (Doubles as cloths hangers for guests)
Game system in bonus room.
Pool table in formal dining room.
Home office in formal living room.
Don't feel obligated to use rooms for their intended purpose. Often, just changing out light fixtures will let you repurpose otherwise seldom used areas.
