Engineer dad, Home Mom, Boy 8, Girl 5
wants to live near similarly boring people
I commute early 530AM so traffic will be a bit less for me. Please advise.
Probably but not definitely rent a 3BR home at first.

BTW any guess at car tax for 2003 Ford Taurus and 2006 Hyundai Sonata?

You want Ballantyne or Union county. You'll be in minivan heaven. Those areas can also be quite expensive. Not sure about your budget.

Might find something in S. Charlotte. We can usually get to the airport in 20 minutes. The only thing is - not new neighborhoods like in Union and Ballantyne, so no community pool, clubhouse, etc.

South Charlotte (sounds huge) ?? How about a few zipcodes? Ballantyne looks out of our league. Just some place with decent public schools. Older as in 1980s is fine. Older as in 1920s is probably not.

How are those areas west of the airport in the next county? Belmont to Gastonia? Mt Holly?

We are well below 100K a year.

Steele Creek area pretty close to airport 28273, 28278

Car taxes or HUT (highway use tax) is a one time tax and its 3% of cars value but capped at $150
-you will have to pay county property tax that will be billed 3 or 4 months after you register, its not much.

I live in City of Kings Mountain.

Look first at Belmont & Cramerton. Check in Mt Holly to see if they are zoned for the new high school. It will open next year & is supposed to take kids from Cramerton's middle school.

In Gastonia, you only want to look in the SE corner. Make sure that it is zoned to Forestview HS.

As a result of the most recent AYP tests, the 3 top districts in the Charlotte area are Mooresville Graded, Union County & Cleveland County. This does not mean that there are no good schools elsewhere. Charlotte has some top schools.

Kings Mountain would get you to the Cleveland County district & would be no further than to go to Union County, from the airport vicinity. You do have to go to Gastonia for a lot of your shopping, though. There is newer construction in town. You have to be careful, though, because the town is in both Cleveland & Gaston Counties. For schools, you need to be on the Cleveland County side.

You could look into the Tega Cay/Fort Mill areas too. I still don't know your price range, but you should be able to find something there. That area has the best school district in SC and plenty of SAHMs.
