My wife and I are in the process of relocating to the lake norman area. We've looked at several homes and found one we liked in a neighborhood called the Peninsula. It seems like to live in the neighborhood you are forced to join their country club, which is of no interest to us.

Is anyone familiar with the neighborhood? Pro's / con's? Is there really a rule that I have to pay over $400 per month to belong to a club that we'll never use?

thanks in advance,

AdrianFenty

I've lived in the Peninsula for 3 years. Love it. A bit old (we are the youngest of 850 homes @ 33), but kids are around and everyone is very nice. Do a search for "Peninsula" or "Cornelius" on here to learn more - I've answered many posts about it, incl pros/cons of the area.

We don't belong to either club (the Yatch Club being the other one) and there is no pressure to. That said, you will pay $1200/yr in HOA, which is mainly to keep the neighborhood looking nice - I'm sure you got the resort-y feel driving in - fresh flowers, xmas lights, firework show (which 1000s attend!), etc.

LMK if you have any more specific questions about the 'hood.

When we moved here 3 years ago we looked at homes in the Peninsula and liked the neighborhood very much. We were looking at the least expensive homes, ie smaller and not on the water. I don't think you are required to join the club, but I decided I did not want to live in a neighborhood where I definitely couldn't afford to join the club. We find it more convenient to be near exit 25. Still, the Peninsula is a very nice area and if I had (a lot) more money I might live there.

We have been renting a home in the peninsula since august and have had a great experience. Of course you are not mandated to join the club. However, the hoa fees are steep. I think the best of both worlds is the be in the area but not technically in the peninsula. There are many pockets that fall into this category off Jetton rd.
