I have to use a week's vacation in January or I'll lose it.
Not interested in snow.

Any ideas for a day trip (or 2-3 day trip) within a reasonable drive?

You could do Florida in about 8-9 hours. You could also head to DC (6 hours) though it will be cold and see the sites.

Well, you could always go down to Morehead City/Atlantic Beach area and do some fishing. visit fort fisher while you're down there. And....Breakfast at the diner, Atlantic Beach, (you'll know it when you see it) is a must do type of thing.

I'd do DC. The beach is really boring in January. Deserted, cold, everything is closed...January is a good time to visit DC b/c the holiday crowds are back at school. Plus everything you'd want to see and do is free!

DC would definitely be better now than in the summer, no doubt.

I like the beach in winter, or fall as it is now. Rates are down, far fewer people, not so hot (yeah, I know ), and the ocean still sounds like the ocean.

Each week, on Tuesday evening, USAirways post it's e-saver fares. You can get great deals but the catch is that you have to take the trip the upcoming weekend. Saturday departure, return no later than Tuesday (maybe Wed). I took a long weekend to Bermuda back in Feb. after seeing a $119 each way. I often see Ft Lauderdale flights for $99 (each way). Anyway, just something to keep in mind if you don't mind traveling that far with short notice.

Of course, you would need a back up plan in case there is nothing attractive on that particular Tuesday prior to your vacation.
