When you say uncured you mean unsmoked-right?
I am trying to find uncooked, unsmoked ham.

Just pick up a pork butt or pork shoulder. That is what I do. Then I either smoke it or bake it. If I bake it, I score it and put a glaze on it - many choices for glazes . . . happy to share recipes if you don't have one you like.

ETA: curing can mean SMOKING or SALTING or DRYING/DEHYDRATING. It sounds like in this case, it is salted and also smoked (the Amish ham). Here in the South, we typically cure by salting and then smoking. With cured ham, one should soak it several hours (I usually do mine for 4 hours) . . . then bake or slice off and grill or fry. When you fry a slice of country ham, you add some coffee and spices and that creates the famous "red eye gravy" that we don't see that often any more.

Sorry I haven't been able to get back to this! To clarify what I mean by "ham that tastes like ham", I rarely find any ham from the grocery store that tastes like ham should ... or actually tastes like anything. It usually seems kind of rubbery feeling, and bland, if not out and out tasteless. I guess I want sugar cured, or "city" ham.

In reading reviews of hams online, I came across a well-liked brand called Carando Ham, which is supposed to be sold locally. However, none of the stores the company lists as sellers have ever heard of it (Bi-Lo and Food Lion are two I remember it named). I am chasing an elusive ham that I don't even know whether it tastes good! Maybe I will just go to Earth Fare, if it's organic it should be good, right? If I ever find one, I will let you all know,

Really, I'd try Aldi. Some of their pork products are Smithfield & some are Cook's. I don't know if there are other brands involved.

I've shopped in Aldi since ~1993 or 4. I've seen pork products being put out which came from Smithfield boxes. I was looking for a local outlet for Cook's Ham & Aldi came up. There could be other brands involved, but those are 2 that I know are at Aldi.

It sounds like the OP might want a fresh ham or as some people call them green hams. This is not cured, no glaze and you can purchase the whole ham or if it's cut the butt half or shank half. This is pure ham straight from the hog. Harris Teeter, Food Lion and other grocery stores usually carry these around the holidays.
