We have lots of spring bulbs that are through about 6 inches, a flower open on the Camelia and buds on the burning bushes and lilacs. Also purple flowers appearing on the vinca ground cover where it gets most sun.
Weeds in lawn are going crazy especially the chick weed.
^ ok, I admit, I have almost no idea what any of that means. the only thing that made sense to me was 'weeds'. I have these things growing all over and unfortunately they're spreading over from my neighbors lawn arrgghh! I don't know what it is, any chance u can snap a pic of what you have? I'll see if I can snap a pic on my side.
the only other thing besides leaves are the dang squirrels that dig little holes into my lawn looking for acorns and whatnot. it's killing me, cause I finally got my lawn looking green and filled in some of the dry dirt spots. in the back yard it's no problem, I just shoot the lil bastards, but I can't do that in the front yard.
Start covering the blubs as colder weather is coming. Some Comelia varieties do flower in winter. Dec. and Jan. good time to walk your yard with spot weed killer (weed-b-gone) to kill off the chick weed and broad leaf that grow in summer and winter. Fescue may be growing so let it grow as softer clay allows root growth. About 4 inches and then trim about 1inch off. Check Out Salisbury Post for the column by Darryl Blackwelder.
I was just noticing along the brick payment weeds are starting to sprout between the cracks, I have not seen any bulbs of flowers as of yet.
The lawn, i have wild onions every so often, and the parts of the yard where I planted Kentucky Fescue is nice and bright green but its getting kinda long. Its new grass and length is good for winter and I do not want to crank up lawn mower in winter.
Im loving this mild winter though.

It's illegal to shoot your gun there and you know it. Leave the little squirrels alone.

This is my idea of winter. Cold at night and the sun warming to 55 during the day. The beauty of NC.
I had a rose put 2 buds on recently. I also have some jonquils peeping up about 4 inches.
I am covering everything over with mulch (leaves, basically). The trees - not sure if they will be damaged or not. I can't tell if the buds are being affected at this stage. But I am concerned about my tulip trees.
This type of weather pattern typically leads to snow and/or ice storms in February, just for the record, lol. Cover stuff over, if possible. Winter could be waiting for us 6 weeks or so into the future!
I'm in pretty much the same position as the OP. Purple verbena still covered in flowers, vinca greening up (no flowers yet), bulbs all up and tons of chickweed. Our backyard is south-facing and gets full sun, so everything out there is usually early anyway, but this is kind of ridiculous.
On Facebook, Brad Panovich posted a long term forecast that shows us getting much colder in mid-January. I hope that's the case. This has been the warmest winter I've experienced in almost 14 years in the South.
Weeds starting to pop up. Also, I just may have to cut my grass tomorrow... it's still growing!
