There was considerable damage in Burke county & Rutherdford County
I was afraid of that, Chi. I am very sorry to hear it. I hope no one was injured.
THat is why I quickly posted the second I got an emergency alert: I know we don't have many readers in that area, but I figured loved ones could always see the message and call their family members or friends. We do have readers in Gaston and Lincoln counties.
CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A rare January tornado warning surprised parts of western NC on Wednesday -- and possible tornadoes were reported in Burke and Rutherford counties, officials said.
A tornado warning was issued around 5:40 p.m. and ran until 6:45 p.m. for six counties in the WBTV viewing area, according to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg.
The storms created dramatic scenes across Alexander, Catawba, Caldwell, Celveland, Lincoln and Burke counties.
"A rare January storm containing possible tornadoes surprised parts of western NC..." - well, were there tornadoes or were there 'possible tornadoes'?
"The storms created dramatic scenes across.....counties." OH MY GOD NOOOOOOOO! BEWARE OF 'DRAMATIC SCENERY'!!!!!!!
"The damage from possible tornadoes was reported..."
can anyone explain to me what a possible tornado...in the past, is (or was)? this thread is, like, kind of embarrassing, sorry. other than "possible clouds" and "there might have been wind", not sure what else we can see in the photos besides, well, clouds and some random police on a street.

They are not confirmed as tornadoes until trained people go out and survey the damage to determine if the storms were tornadoes or just microbursts or strong winds. There was a tornado; it was captured on film. But it's not "official" until it's been verified.

Have you ever seen the aftermath of a tornado in person?

I didn't think that you had, since you called this thread embarassing.
I grew up in tornado alley, with sirens & regular trips to the basement. I will never forget being taken to see wreckage when a tornado touched down in a wooded area across the road from friends of my family.
Experts examine wreckage to determine if a tornado was the cause or sheer winds, now.

I didn't say anything positive or negative or indifferent about being in a tornado or the effects of one.
the source of my confusion still stands, even after looking up types of tornadoes, thinking maybe there was a tornado called "possible tornado". but since there isn't, I'm trying to figure out how something that happened in the past is 'possible'...it either WAS....or WASN'T....a tornado. that's all I'm sayin.
Here's part of the problem. Most tornado warnings are false alarms.
Until the science improves (like it has w/hurricane warnings), you will always have a good number of people who will say "cry wolf" and not take these seriously.
Should you ignore the warnings? Absolutely not. We have seen what happens (in the worst case scenerio)when people ignore warnings and they come to fruition. I just hope science speeds up the process on how to close the gap on the uncertainty of forecasting actual tornadoes...
