Moving to Charlotte soon to either Union Co. or Huntersville. Does anyone know if Marvin Ridge, Cuthbertson, Weddington and Hough all have JV cheer squads? Do they have competitive squads? Can cheerleaders be on a squad that cheers at games and is also competitive? What about charter schools (Lake Norman) - do they have cheer squads and athletics? Thanks for any info.

Go to the school system's website, then look for the drop down menu for each individual school's website. Click on Athletics and find Cheerleading. You will find a contact person's email address or phone number. I would suggest going straight to those people for facts about their squads and what is offered. I'm sure what they offer changes a bit from school to school depending upon the expertise of the person in charge.

Here's Union County:

Huntersville would be Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools:

Mooresville City and Iredell/Stateville schools are also close by, you might check them too.

I have gone to quite a few hs basketball games. At Hopewell, the JV cheerleaders were doing back flips! (Is that what you mean be competitive?)

yes Marvin Ridge does, Weddington does, Cuthbertson does, as do all Union County schools. Marvin Ridge does competition too (my understanding from a mom of a cheerleader). Many if not all seem to belong to outside cheer groups as well. They compete at high levels at huge tournaments. I hope this helps some. I know one is called Elite cheer the other may have stars on their uniforms...h,,, cheering is huge and I mean huge here.
Many get cut too, but that is because of how many try out and have competed for years and years at the club level.

Thanks everyone. Great info, I'll definitely check the school websites and speak with someone in the dept. By competitive, I mean that the squads compete against each other at competitions. mewith3, my daughter actually does both - school cheer and all star cheer. I will check out Elite. We are looking for an all star gym, too.

Competitive Cheer has become really big around here. You'll have no problem finding a gym. All middle schools and high schools around here have cheer squads. My two oldest girls competitive cheer, my middle daughter did both competitive and middle and high school and her hs MS team went to nationals. I think it is the choice of the coach and girls if they compete, but I don't think it is a norm.
I'm personally not a huge fan of the competitive side. They seem to be so focused on winning that academics are nuisance. I don't know who plans the competitions, but undoubtably they are not raising kids. My wife and girls walked in the door at 3 am this past Monday morning after attending an Atlanta comp. The girls had school and the wife had to work. Put them in tumbling classes and keep me in school. Hopefully the can get a scholarship!
