I think you are talking about Ciro's Italian Restaurant up in the University area of Charlotte. The owner's father in law plays accordian sometimes. The food is excellent. I hope this helps.
Sorry, don't have anything new to add other than it's definitely Ciro's that you were thinking of with the accordian player - he was quite the soccer player back in his day, too
I'm assuming you Aren't Italian and originally come from either NY/NJ/Long Island/Chicago... just a wild guess.
If not, well that's where the best pizza comes from. It's not about the 'freshness', it has to mainly do w/the water/yeast in the pie. That's where it starts.
If you tried Mama's, you would understand. No disrespect, but its hard to find authentic, good tasting pizza if you've been spoiled w/the good stuff before...
OMG!!! Finally someone who understands me. I moved to Charlotte 5 months ago and don't have any desire for pizza any more. I live literally down the block from Mamas back in LI and grew up with the owners and their kids. They have been telling me for months that their cousin opened a Mamas of Mint Hill but I was never able to find a website on them until now. I can't wait to try it and get a real taste of home, especially since the ingrediants are all shipped from LI. ( I hope the water is too. That makes all the difference. I miss our dirty NY water.) Makes everything taste soooo good.
tonys in ballantyne is excellent for pizza, as we finally tried brooklyn pizza on Colony and rea I didnt like the crust...Now Italian food Fontenella's in Matthews YUMMMM the owner is from sicily and then lived in Brooklyn and has been here for a long time, it was recommended and it was delicious

I always thought Mama's was very good, but I'd have to put it 2nd IMO now that I've tried Angela's near Margaret Wallace and Idewild. I'm a thin crust type of guy and that's how they make their pies.
The point is, I think most who know their pie have different tastes (some like thin crust, some like thick; some like alot of sauce, some like more cheese, etc...) There are good pizzaria's in the area, you just have to scope them out...
DH and I are not Italian, but we travel and have had the joy of eating great Italian food across this country.
Unless someone who really knows Italian food recommends a great restaurant to us, we usually walk away somewhat disappointed.
We would love to know what is considered to be really really good, authentic Italian food here in the CLT area.
So what is the consensus on the "best" Italian restaurants here in this region? Don't mind driving. Atmosphere is not as important as the food . . . price point is important in the sense of - if it is great - don't mind paying for it - but not interested in paying for mediocre food in a beautiful atmosphere, LOL.
