Hi we were considering getting a place in NC and were debating btwn Charlotte and Leland. We are from NYC area. I read a lot of negative things about Charlotte and nothing about Leland so I figured I would try to get help here.
About us: We are a married couple in our 45-55 range. We are middle class Italian American and Greek Italian American. I have worked in law firms for about 30 years administratively and human resources. He has a phd in clinical psychology, masters in education and and various other stuff and works UPS. We are NOT elitists and get along with just about everyone because we don't think anyone is beneath us or we are beneath anyone else. So what is the job market like?
Can you make friends with the people of NC? I have heard a lot of NYers have moved there. Is Charlotte as racist as I have been reading on the boards?
I see a lot of places that are controlled by property management (places with pools, tennis, etc.) - are the monthly charges high for these homes? Looking for something with btwn quarter acre and acre as we love animals and have dogs, cat. Where outside of Charlotte would you recommend when looking fot a good place between under $240,000.
Is it hard to find a carpenter who you can trust to behonest or an auto mechanic?
Any feedback would be great. Thanks much - G & N.

Well, I'm a transplant. I came down from South Jersey. I live 30 miles out, west of Charlotte. I've got a great auto mechanic & I have a very honest HVAC guy who gives me connections, when needed, to other honest trades people. Where to live would depend on where your job was, but you'd have to move out from Charlotte to get the larger lots in that price range.
I would assume that all the negative things I hear about the NYC area aren't true, so you shouldn't expect all the negative things you hear about Charlotte to be true either. There are racists everywhere, sorry to say. No more here, than in NY, I am sure of that. I do not consider Charlotte to be racists although we have them here. It's not like they are in your face screaming "go back north". Maybe 20 years ago, but not today. We all get along here.
Yes, we are southerners, and yes there are plenty of northerners, midwesterners and west coast people here. As someone in another thread mentioned recently, you are treated here as you treat others. If you smile at someone (something rarely done on the streets of NYC), then you will likely get a smile or a "hello" back. It's the southern way. If you walk around with a scowl on your face then you probably won't make many friends here, or anywhere for that matter.
If you want to be near the coast, go for Leland, although I know nothing about the town except that it is near Wilmington.

You've been reading that Charlotte is racist on this board? Really? Can you copy and paste to give an example?
Charlotte and Leland are completely different kinds of places - you want a bigger city or a teen tiny small town?
I suggest you plan a visit - seeing things first hand is the best way to get a feel for it.
My wife says everyone is so nice and pleasant here because they are glad to be out of the NORTH. Themisconceptions about this area are mind boggling.
Last fall, prior to our move here from western Pa, a white family had a cross burned in their front yard because they took in a black foster teenage male. The boy was a good student, nice person and a member of the football team. I doubt if cross burnings are so common here that the Charlotte Observer no longer covers them.
Is Charlotte as racist as I have been reading on the boards?

I can't imagine how bad the rest of the country must be if Charlotte is still in your consideration
