We don't spend enough time out walking, and were considering starting to check out different parks each weekend. However, our daughter uses a wheelchair and we will need paved paths to push her on. In looking at the different parks, some have greenways, which seem to be paved paths, other parks have what are termed "walking trails", does anyone know if these would be paved or would depend on the park?
Any suggestions for some good spots to check out? We'd mostly stay in southern meck county, as we live near Matthews.
THANKS!

The greenways have some dirt gravel paths on them and some are sections of long wooden bridges. The four mile creek greenway is mostly paved with entrances near piper glen. There is an entrance on 51 to the mcmullen creek greenway but that is mostly a dirt path. I think in general it depends on which greenway or park. Check the neck county parks and recreation site. They have maps of the greenway which should tell you what material the surface is.

Thanks, from my searching today the charmeck website isn't clear on surface type, hence my question here. The info you provided is good though, thanks! Short dirt paths are ok, though I'd get tiresome if it was an all dirt path.

I believe 4 Mile Creek Greenway is mostly paved. However, I think the entrance to it near 485 is a fairly steep boardwalk. You'll probably want to go to one of the other neighborhood entrances.

I also think most of McMullen Creek is paved.

There are actually 2 "Four Mile Creek" greenways. The one in Matthews I believe is all paved with some boardwalk.
Four Mile Creek Greenway - Matthews

The longer one off Bevington (by Trader Joe's) is all paved or boardwalk until the last mile (off 51). So if you go to that one, I recommend parking near the Trader Joe's or the parking lot on Johnston. They recently paved more sections in the woods.

MCAlpine Greenway will be closed for 2 years! It's dirt now, but I read it will be paved when it reopens. Apparently, the maintenance cost are lower than a dirt path. Campbell Creek Greenway (at the end of McAlpine from Margaret Wallace Road on north) is all paved. Then, a greater distance away, there is the Sugar Creek Greenway which is all paved.

Lower McAlpine Creek, McMullen Creek, and Four Mile Creek Greenways

The gravel part is at the Pineville-Matthews entrance and goes for about a mile, on a dry day it is very wheel chair accessible.

The rest is paved or boardwalk, I see wheelchairs down there all the time none having a trouble navigating it.

We tried out the 4 mile Creek Greenway today, it was GREAT! My daughter actually enjoyed going pretty fast down the entrance boardwalk. We did a nice 3.5 mile walk, it was perfect weather and the paved greenway was great, nice and wide too. Thanks for the suggestions, we'll have to keep this up, and force our teen to spend time with us without headphones in her ears and her phone in her hands
