Foxx knows if he does not round up the votes soon, it will become an issue in the city elections next year, and the council will become more weak knee'd.
He has lost the vote twice and he won't let it be voted on again until he knows for sure that he can get the votes for it to be passed.
i.e. A horrible politician that panders to one segment of Charlotte and ignores the rest. Well... the people get what they have voted for.
Who besides him wants the blasted thing? At least one of the councilwomen he is accused of threatening is a Democrat. I'm just glad they are thinking for themselves.
The thing I cannot understand is why this project keeps coming up over and over. I have yet to talk with anyone who thinks the street car is a good use of tax dollars... even my most liberal and progressive friends do not support the project. Given Charlotte's challenges and needs, has anyone ever presented a good reason why we need this project?
WBTV is reporting that Fox and his cronies have started to threaten the members of the city council against the streetcar project as voting against the "Black" community.
And there you go. That's it all summed up in a nutshell.
As an east side resident (almost) even I have reservations about this project. We need capital investment over here, but we could do so much more with considerably less money than a trolley.
And I kinda resent council for hanging this boondoggle on the east side folks. It's easy for the "east side" to get a target painted on its back when the type of projects that get the limelight are the Eastland mall and the trolley. How about some good ole' street corridor improvements, lol? Some "walkability" projects like East Blvd. got...
Actually the $119M they want to spend isn't for the East Side. Fox wants to use this money to construct the portion of the line from the Charlotte Transit Center to JC Smith University. Presumably after that, they will continue to the Rosa Parks Transit center west of there.
The plan to build the streetcar line from CPCC to Eastland mall is somewhere in the $400M range and there are no discussions on the table for building. Charlotte at this time does not have any way to fund such a large amount at one time.
This isn't to be confused with a small section that will be extended from the CTC to CPCC and a little beyond. The federal government give Fox some pork to the tune of $25M for that. The city has to come up with another ~$15M to actually build the project.
