To make it easy for my husband while we were house hunting, I told him that any house he found had to be in or very near the South Blvd, 277, Monroe Rd, & Fairview/Sardis Rd "box" on a map.
You could expand the southern border of that box: once you get south of Fairview, there are still some very nice homes, but a couple of the schools aren't as good & you start having to deal with actual traffic on your commute, not just slow moving cars. Also, when I first heard the desirable real estate "box," that person chose Independence as the eastern border. The "box" was a nice shorthand that let us easily reject things that looked ok, but fell too far outside the border of nice neighborhoods in the south/where we wanted to live.

Reason: missed a word
When I moved here I rented in Cotswold (churchill downs) 2bed 2 bath with pool and tennis/basketball court. $700 a month. We used a broker. We coudlnt afford to buy in cotswold but we bought a house right next door to cotswold. Southpark is 10 minutes away... 2 Harris Teeters, 2 Walmarts within 5 minutes.. Wholefoods is 10 minutes away and Uptown is a straight shot down Monroe/7th or take Randolph for a nicer view into the city. There is also an express bus from Matthews that goes down the middle of Independence. If I worked Uptown I would use it because Independence is always backed up.
You can tell I love where I live...

South of Uptown, I would say to avoid everything east of Providence Rd and West of Rea Rd. North of Uptown, I would say to avoid everything within the city limits.

Cotswold is a great location - Elizabeth, too, but it is usually pretty pricey. I lived near the far north of CLT (Mallard Creek area at the Concord line) and there were some nice (cheaper) places over there.
