The requirement to pay the tax first has been, but the change is, the registration & tax will now be billed, and due, together. The inspection is also due the same month, and has to occur before the registration gets renewed, as it does now.

This combo taxes and registration starts in middle of this year.

You have 90 days from the day taxes is mailed to complete inspection, and registration.

Registrations are mailed one month ahead of due date.
Inspections must be done within 90 days prior to do due date.

The change is previously you had 15 days grace period of next month to pay past due date, that has been extended to the end of the month.
Basically an individual has 90 days to pay for tags & taxes at the DMV tag office.

Yes, I read it in the Observer. Hopefully it will cut down on the 13 percent of people not paying their personal property taxes.

Of course if you drive an old hooptie or restored high priced classic that is older than the 1978/79 model year, you don't have to have an inspection.

Thanks for that reminder. Someone had said that if it is considered "antique" you do not have to pay it.

It sucks for me because I will have to find another 200 dollars in the fall to give the DMV since I already paid mine last month...stemming from my October registration renewal.

I'm moving to Charlotte in a few weeks. I'm curious about some of the logistics of car registration. In Arlington, VA, you must register with the state DMV and get charged out the behind there and then you get registered with the city and pay a 5% personal property tax on all autos. Moving from Oklahoma, I almost had a heart attack when I learned I had to pay both the state and locals.

Is there the state and local auto registration fees and taxes? On a car valued at $15,000, how much will I be hurting for?

Start here: NCDOT: New to NC or Moving?

Then go here for fee specifics: NCDOT: Titles

Since the government always thinks what you own is worth more than you think, let's bump your car up to $18K and you start with a 3% Highway Use Tax so $540 plus misc fees that will likely be under $100.

After that you'll just pay for tags which is like $28 or so. The state won't come after you for property or other taxes after you pay the HUT one time.

You have to have your driver's license first ($10) and get your car inspected which in Mecklenburg County includes emissions so $43.60 or so for that.

Now on to local government: Registered Motor Vehicle Tax

For the combined Charlotte/Mecklenburg they want 1.2292 for each $100 in value. So about $220 tax. You'll probably get this bill in 3 or 4 months after registering and then in future years you'll pay that when you pay your tags or that's the idea since that system has been delayed.

Charlotte also wants a $30 fee for your car. So the HUT sucks but you only pay it once.
