Just stumbled on this article in the New York Daily News .. have anyone here actually seen these vultures around and if so what is your personal take on why they seem to gravitate to the area?

Dozens of 'creepy' vultures freaking out residents of small North Carolina city - NY Daily News

Another story blown way out of proportion.

Turkey Vultures are around all year. They are drawn to dead wildlife....no big deal.

I agree, that reporter of NY times must be grasping for news.

Its true buzzards migrate from the north east from North Carolina to Louisiana.
How ever many turkey vultures are life long residents.

What is creepy is when you hiking on a trail and you hear the leaves ruffle in woods on side of mountain and cant see what is coming then turn the corner then releave it just a bunch of buzzards like I experience at Hanging Rock.

What even creepier here in Huntersville a bunch was perched on fencing lining back yard deck looking into house thru french glass doors.

It looks like the NY Daily News was regurgitating (pun intended ) a WSOC story. I think this was the original source:
Is Shelby a vulture village? - Local - The Shelby Star

I also heard the story propagated on local radio.

This is ridiculous.

They normally winter in a wooded area at the intersection of Battleground & Kings Mountain Blvd, just south of the city limits. I haven't seen as many this winter. Apparently, some were attracted to Shelby.

They'll leave in 2 or 3 weeks. March 15th, Hinckley, Ohio celebrates the return of the buzzards.

The Shelby Star had a slow day & tossed that in. WSOC picked it up & that got picked up in NY.

Method to get the vultures to leave... #1 Get marine emergency flare..#2 wait until its late because you don't want anyone to see you. #3 discharge flare into the group of vultures # 4 run into your house turn off the lights and pretend you didn't see a thing..(do it when its not real dry or when its raining to avoid burning up the neighborhood)

They can be very messy birds when nesting on your property. And you're not allowed to disturb them until the hatchings fledge and leave.

They will hiss like demons when getting too close

According to the Shelby newspaper:
“Do not rush at the birds to scare them off,” said Duren, a N.C. State senior. “If you do scare a vulture, it will vomit. It’s their defense mechanism. They think you will eat [the vomit] instead of them.” {insert vomit emoticon}
