As Charlotte-based department-store chain Belk celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, the company is also investing $600 million in its stores and hiring new workers -- primarily in e-commerce.
Belk Inc. marks 125th anniversary with $600 million in investments | CharlotteObserver.com

I think that longest running local retail company that I know of. I always have like Belk stores as they always clean and have helpful friendly staff.
I been shopping at Belks since I was a kid. The clothes that I have bought there always seem to be made well and last in my closet.
Sometimes prices might be high but I pay attention to their sales and can end up with some deals.
Ever since I was a kid and needed assistance, there was some one more than willing to help.
I do my Christmas shopping there too as I never dealt with mad crowds there even shopping on Christmas Eve.

125 years wow; Way to go Belks - Charlotte

From the article looks like they are trying to keep up to date with the e-commerce

I think I read somewhere, a few months ago that Belk had decided to bring some IT jobs back in house that it had outsourced to a national firm (but with a local office & workers). I wonder if some of this hiring is related to that?

No - this is above and beyond that. Several hundred jobs in various jobs added over the last few years, and more on the way.

I am glad to see Belk surviving as a successful singular entity, as most regional dept. stores nationwide have now been consolidated into Macy's as a result of the Federated/May stores merger. Names such as Hecht's, Rich's, Burdine's, Lazarus, and Kaufman's have now disappeared. But Belk is surviving and modernizing and expanding. But I do miss their old classic logo with the big B that was changed 2 years ago. The current lower case logo looks more similar to Macy's and Bloomingdale's.
