Run away, if the basement has 2-3 humidifiers running there must be a major problem.
Chances are the musty smell is with all the rain we have had lately, it sounds like a underlying issue.
The fact the sellers agent voided the test, they need to pay for a new test, but personally I would look elsewhere.
I checked again and it is my bad - they were all de-humidifiers... and we have scheduled a moisture inspection.. waiting to see what comes after that !
RUN!!! 2-3 humidifiers? Fans? UMmmm....yeah, there's a moisture problem. And there's probably a mold problem too. You don't want to expose your family to that, believe me. We had a moisture problem in our home in NY to the point where both my son & I had breathing/asthma issues from it. Believe it or not, even our dog was affected by it. I'd look elsewhere.
exactly that was our thought.. we have a dog too and the last thing we want to do is put him through trouble for any of our oversight ! but one thing which i found out is they are all de-humidifiers.. and we have set up a mositure inspection.. so lets see what turns out ! Thanks for your response..
If you truly love the home, hire a inspector that specializes in basement/moisture/structure/grading etc. I know there is a specific term for it but it's escaping me at the moment. They will inspect the foundation and for moisture issues etc. I would invest in one of those and see what is the issue.
However I would be leery since they aren't disclosing ahead of time just WHY those humidifiers and fans are always on.
Thanks for your inputs.. and you are right.. the whole mystery part is worrying me..
but as of last night.. they said they will hire people to remove the boxes and give us the entire basement (with the fans and de-humidifiers turned off).. so that we can do any inspection that we want to..
we have scheduled a moisture and full basement inspection.. fingers crossed... we loved this house.. and would really want things to turn out good...
If I'm doing a test and the homeowner taints it by turning on fans and a dehumidifier it would wonder if they were hiding something.
exactly my point.. so me have had them remove all boxes from the basement and have scheduled another moisture inspection.. also waiting on the radon test results.. if the inspection guy has doubts we will run it again .. !! more than the homeowner here the listing agent is the nasty one !
My SIL bought a house in a small town in Virginia several years ago. They had a radon test that passed, but later found out, after signing all the paperwork, that the homeowner had opened all the windows around the basement during the test. They did a retest, and there was enough radon that they needed to pay for additional work to get it addressed.
