I know, he's a real prince. Please note he didn't name any of the old MidAtlantic cities, which contain a lot of twins & duplexes, as well as pretty much the same architecture as Charlotte.

That said, the OP has to decide where he can get a job & whether he wants city, suburb, or country.

The only part I didn't care for living in KC is it is in the middle of the country. I like the Charlotte area because in less than 4 hours you can be at the beach or the mountains. Given your description, I don't see the downtown lifestyle as crucial to you...however I think both cities have a nice center. I agree with the post that mentioned Lake Wylie...its a little more "country"...Norman is more of a place for the city folk (no offense to them...its not a bad thing.) As for jobs....I really can't help you with that area, I'd just check the job sites and see what is out there. And as for potentially going back to school...there are many excellent options in both cities.
