Last year I made the mistake of going early to pick strawberries and they were not sweet nor very flavorful. I went back later (mid May almost June) and what a huge difference in taste. (same place too)
I would check out the state parks such as McDowell's for a day of walking the trails, picnics etc. Also you can check out the museums in uptown, my kids enjoy them all. Andrew Jackson Park in SC just over the border has a neat little piece of history for kids to explore and learn about. And in that theme, Latta Plantation also has a great historical house to visit too.
