I did my own home system. I bought it off amazon for $150.00. Skylink, look it up. You can even buy the kits with a dialer that will call you if anything goes off.

I did door and motions sensors and have 2 "loud ringers" with one on lower level and one upper to provide notification of an intruder. I didn't want to pay a monitoring fee when the main time I want to know if someone is breaking in is when I am home.

The home security system that we bought from Protection plus in Toronto is working pretty well. It hasn't caused any trouble till now. But I am not sure whether you will get it in Charlotte. Anyway, I suggest you not to choose the company who try to sell the item through phone. You'd better ask your friends or relatives in your area what they use for home security and inquire about their experience. If you find a lot of them use the same security company, then it's a good sign that this alarm company has a reliable reputation.

Check out the IRIS system at Lowe's. It's DIY but has a lot of components that you can add individually as you like, free standard service but you can upgrade.

I was just looking at SimpliSafe online a few minutes ago. It's DIY, but it is very easy to install, does not work with a LAN line, instead it works with a cell phone, so no wires for intruders to cut. They have a video online showing how to install the system and it is very easy. The best part is the cost..... $14.99 a month and no contract. My new home will be finished this summer and I am planning on using this system.

I just saw an ad for AT&T if you want to call around and compare.

But I am going to do one of the DIY types that uses your cellphone and apps.
