After years of researching, narrowing down our locations to move, my family and I decided that NC is the place to go. Now it's deciding whether Winston-Salem or Charlotte is a better choice. Both are great places, although we seem to be leaning more towards Charlotte.

I have 2 kids, one is 3 and the other is 7. We are planning to move in the summer of 2015 - so next year is it for us!

WORK: I'm in the administration field in Healthcare, so I will be looking into the Hospitals. My wife works from home in customer service and she can transfer anywhere.

SCHOOL: I am a school ratings guy and need the best ratings in Elementary school possible.

BUDGET: We are looking into a 2-3 bedroom single family 2 story home or townhouse under $1k, preferably 850-950, is this possible???

Which location is best, Winston-Salem or Charlotte?

I live in South Florida - my biggest concern is finding a work. I will have to start new and fresh, since the hospital I work for now does not have a location to transfer up in NC. So I am wondering if jobs will offer SKYPE to interview first before we meet in person?? I am 10+ hours away to commute to NC, I wouldn't want to drive or fly up just for an interview without knowing that I have a strong possibility of getting the job. Does this make sense?

Also, can you please provide me with any safe areas I can consider?

Your help is greatly appreciated. THANK YOUUU!

There are 2 main hospital systems in the Charlotte area. Most people apply to them. Carolinas Medical Center is the main hospital of the larger system & Presbyterian Hospital is the main hospital of the other system. You could also look at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia. They are not in the 2 main systems. There are hospitals scattered all over, so you should should be prepared to not be in Charlotte. The further the hospital is from Charlotte, the better your chances will be. You can always ask for a transfer later.

I don't have suggestions on all of your questions, but I will suggest to be ready, willing and able to come up for face to face interviews. There are lots of people in Charlotte looking for work and I am sure most companies will rather meet face to face. I've heard of some companies doing phone interviews before actually bringing you in, but that will depend on the companies/hospitals you apply to. I moved here from NYC and I came to my interviews in person (12 hours + drive each way). I even had 1 interview that went very well and they asked me to come back in a few days to meet other people. It took some overnight driving and searching for last minute air deals, but I had to make it work if I wanted to stand out and get a job.

Good luck!

Samana,

Thanks for that information. I was afraid it would come to that, but it was expected as well. I am ready for it anyway and will do what needs to be done. Moving is never easy, but work comes first before the move.

Hope others can help to answer my other questions and give us a light at the end of the tunnel.

What areas in Charlotte are the safest? Does it snow here every year? I am really looking forward to seeing snow .. coming from South Florida, its always hot. I am so tired of the humidity.

You'll love the Charlotte climate. August can be beastly, but that's just one month, and it's like that just about everywhere in the U.S..

Humidity, except for August after a rainstorm, the humidity is mercifully low year 'round.

Charlotte got very little snow this year, and it didn't even stick longer than a day, which is typical of the area. Some years we get 2-3 snow storms that turn the city into a Currier and Ives post card. If you are REALLY interested in snow and live in Charlotte, you can visit the western part of the state for skiing. Snow is nice, but having lived in the Northeast, I can tell you that driving in it is a drag after three days.

Employment: I believe that medicine is one of the major employers in the city.

Have you tried Indeed for job listings?

Carolinas Medical Center Jobs, Employment in Charlotte, NC | Indeed.com

or CMC's job board?

Cmc University Jobs - Carolinas HealthCare System Jobs (There are more locations)

or Novant Health?

Novant Health Jobs, Employment in Charlotte, NC | Indeed.com

Novant Health

These are just a few resources. I don't know your area of expertise, but if you narrow your search, you'll find something.

Good Luck!
