Im looking to relocate to nc, trying to choose between charlotte and Raleigh and like both areas. I have 3 young kids and im looking for whats best for them. I find the public schools in Raleigh to have somewhat better ratings. There is a private school in Charlotte i am considering. Any good or bad points on either city to move to with kids? we love the concord mills mall, but there are parks and museums in the Raleigh area we like. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

There have been many threads on this question in the past so you may want to search for them. Personally I prefer Raleigh even though I live in Charlotte, but Charlotte is a fine family place as well. Which private school are you considering? Charlotte does have Discovery place which is good for kids. There are some good public schools in Charlotte as well, but it's true that the best schools are supposed to be in Wake County.

The reasons I myself prefer Raleigh: The presence of NC State and other nearby universities (so more intellectual/quirky vibe), parks, closer to DC, more preservation of historic architecture in downtown.

I have lived in both. I love both cities. Both have fine schools, parks, and museums. Charlotte Metro has Carowinds/Lake Norman/Lake Wylie/Panthers/Hornets/Whitewater Center/NASCAR/Discovery Place/UNCC. Raleigh Metro has NC State/Duke/UNC/Hurricanes/Umstead Park/State Capitol/Museum of Science/Museum of Art.

Charlotte gets the edge in restaurants and night life. Raleigh is 2 hours to the beach, 3 to the mountains. Charlotte is 3 hours to the beach, 2 to the mountains. Raleigh has done a better job of preserving its historical buildings and landmarks. Charlotte has more distinct neighborhoods (Dilworth, South End, Plaza Midwood, South Park, Ballantyne, University, Uptown, Midtown, etc.) and areas of town, although Raleigh is improving in that respect.

Basically, you can't really go wrong in either city. I prefer Charlotte to Raleigh for various reasons, but I couldn't put down anyone's decision to move to Raleigh.
