If there is a house within 75 miles of DC that is 8,700 square feet for $600k, then I doubt you'd want to be anywhere near it, as it's probably a crime scene, or nearly about to fall over.
Ashburn still is in Virginia. The only pricey suburbs of DC are the ones in Maryland.
This suggests you know very little about the Virginia suburbs. Having lived in the Virginia suburbs for over 36 years (Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax and F'burg) with children who played soccer in a tri-state league with fields in many of the DC suburbs, your statement is very puzzling. While some parts of Montgomery County or PG County MD are pricey, the Virginia homes in Arlington, Mclean (Fairfax), and Alexandria are equally pricey and there is significantly greater housing stock at price points above $5 million in the Virginia suburbs. Even a far out subdivision in Chantilly or Great Falls, Virginia is just as pricey as a close-in subdivision in Montgomery County.
Ashburn might not be a close-in suburb to DC, but with the expansion of the Silver Line to Tysons Corner and eventually to Dulles, Ashburn will become an even more desirable location. The highway commute into DC from Ashburn is just as good as commuting from parts of Montgomery County like Rockville.
By the way, before we relocated to our retirement home in the Charlotte area, we also looked at Ashburn, which had significantly higher prices than Charlotte for comparable homes -- one of the reasons we moved down here.
Came from the Ashburn area myself about ten years ago. Well, Fairfax County just south of...
We found that moving to the south Charlotte/Ballantyne area was a good fit for us and reminded my husband a lot of his neighborhood, "Lowes Island" in Dulles.
There is no comparison to DC traffic. It is **so much** better here, although for the last six months it's been a bit harried with all the construction. Still, my commute into the office from right in Ballantyne to Uptown is 30-45 minutes. Every week or two it *might* hit 50 or 55 minutes, but rarely.
Also, you'll get way more bang for your buck here housing wise. In the Ardrey Kell/Johnston Rd area you can get 4000 sf for somewhere in the neighborhood of $500k. Way less expensive than up where you're coming from!
We moved down from Sterling (Dominion Station near Dulles Town Center)in 2006. We moved because of the home prices. We sold our 2700 square foot townhouse for more than we paid for our 4500 square foot house down here. We settled in western Cabarrus County close to the Meck line north of Charlotte. I don't have a commute as I telecommute for my company (office is in Reston). My husband commuted to uptown for a time and it was 25 minutes in the morning (he left at 6:30 to be there by 7) and afternoons took him 45 minutes.
We just recently moved down here from Chantilly. We sold our ~1200 sqft condo in South Riding for the same price as we paid for our 2600 sqft SF in Fort Mill. I would say that from what I've seen so far that Marvin, Weddington, and Waxhaw are comparable to Ashburn.
