Just wanted to know peoples thoughts on the street car project? Do you think it would be a benefit to East and West Charlotte? Or would you rather see a light rail instead of streetcars?

Just asking
Light rail would be more beneficial. Streetcars should be used as infill.
Too early to tell, but I think it's too expensive and very limited in its use. Also the potential for delays be a use of traffic incedents is something I've not seen addressed. All it takes is one wreck or a breakdown and the trolley is stuck in place.

Didn't the streetcar issue come up during Mayor Cannon's recent "troubles"? The streetcar seems like it might be Charlotte's "Bridge to Nowhere" - no one really seems to see an urgent need for it.
Haha that's a loaded question the OP asked since it's a hot topic for those in the city. I'm all for mass transit connecting many different areas of the city. However in this line I think we'd see equal benefit as BRT (bus rapid transit) that operates exactly as a street car with dedicated stations in the median. They also trigger traffic signals to change/shorten as they approach to keep the R in BRT. For an example of one that has spurred development the Healthline in Downtown Cleveland to East Cleveland has been one of BRT's most successful implementations in the US.
Many BRT systems worldwide operate in vehicles identical to streetcars without the track.
For this area I believe this would have been as efficient at a lower cost. Then I would have utilized the savings to develop a east to west LRT line from the airport, running close to Uptown and then down Monroe.

This is the correct answer. BRT would have been the best option. No track just needs to be next to the sidewalk, better use of money, and less chance of traffic issues.

There already is a street car in Charlotte. Its by University City I think.
I agree that light rail would have been better. I also have issues with the extremely short first phase. 1.5 miles from the Arena to Presby isn't much. The first phase should've been Rosa Parks/Beatties Ford to Plaza Midwood.

I think you mean CPCC? I do not know of a street car in this area. CPCC has the track in the ground but I don't think there is a street car currently running, there is the gold rush but that is just a bus.
