Hi guys. I have a dirst floor crawl space (and fairly old duct work) and am sick of freezing floors. I have read that encapsulation is the trend. Has anyone done this? Can you recommend a company? I wonder how much this is going to cost.

To insulate is one thing, but to encapsulate.......very expensive, from what I hear.

To hire someone just to insulate between your floor joists, about <$1000.00. To encapsulate, easily $3500.00.

I live in a 1971 house and I know what a cold floor is. I might look into radiant floors, since we are replacing most of our floors soon anyway.

It's not that difficult a job to do yourself. You'll need a helper and some waterproof tape that will stick to the foundation and piers . The greatest expense is the material. Heavy vinyl is the best, but you can achieve the same results with 4 mil plastic sheeting found at Home Depot and Lowes. It runs about $45.00 per 1000 feet.

Here's a You Tube video that shows how it's done:

Insulation is another story:

This video insulation video may be overkill. There are others that show simpler procedures. One word of caution: If you work with fiberglas insulation, get a better air filter than the cheap paper surgical mask that the guy in this video is wearing.
