Do people haggle on Christmas trees from the places with no marked prices? I've often wondered if I should since I just pay asking price. I would think if there's no listed price that it's open for negotiation.
If you have kids its worth the trip to the mountains. If you get off the beaten path a fresh cut 7' tree is under $30. You can pick it then the farmer will cut it. You don't realize how stale the Charlotte trees are until you actually get a fresh one and aren't picking up pine needles all month.
One of my favorite spots is around Plumtree. One you find a farmer and get your tree, you can stop at the Toe River Lodge and check out their microbrewery (Blind Squirrel). They also have a zip line coarse if its warm or you can drive to Jonas Ridge snow tubing if its cold.

That said, the idea of making a day trip to NC mountains as a family memory maker is impossible to beat.
Put the tree in a bucket of water as soon as you arrive home. The trip from the mountains will be tough on a fresh cut tree. Or install it as soon as you arrive home.
For local lots asking for discount is up to you. For farmer cutting I say hand it over and make everybody feel warm inside.
We have gone to Penland Tree Farm right in York, SC for the past 2 years and love it. The trees are priced better and you get the experience of cutting your own right down the road from Charlotte.
Officers from Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office run a tree lot that supports a couple of local charities Hometown Heroes and the Blair Mills Foundation. Nobody gets paid and 100% of the proceeds go to children and their families in the local area fighting potentially terminal disease. The lot is located at the Mallard Creek Church BBQ site. They have a huge family day in December with all sorts of first responders vehicles, mascots, charities, etc. Last year they had a CMPD chopper land.

When people say "cut your own," do they mean you can pick your tree and the people at the lot will cut it for you???
Total city-boy here. I don't own a chainsaw, nor would I trust myself with one.
