We're moving from CA to NC... We're trying to narrow down areas. So far we haven't found anything that beats Ballantyne. Any recommendations for an area with excellent schools, low crime and great area? We did like Mint Hill also but there wasn't really anything around it and looked a little scary.

Mint Hill scary haha.

This is probably the most common question in the history of C-D, searching the forum might help. You were also pretty vague and didn't mention budget or job location. If you think Mint Hill is scary, you may be afraid to venture outside of South Charlotte/Ballantyne/Marvin/Weddington.

As the said above, where would you be working? What is your budget? There are really nice comparable areas in South Park and North of Charlotte. But it depends on your job location. Plus just use Forum Tools and search ballantyne.

Have you looked into the University City area? Folks on this forum say that it's uber safe and generally, a powerhouse of family goodness.

Mint Hill is scary now? Wow I think I've seen it all on this forum. I suppose Ballantyne is the Garden of Eden, people must be crazy to live anywhere else.

Don't know your budget, but areas around South Park Mall have very good schools and are safe as well (neighborhoods would include Barclay Downs, Mountainbrook, Foxcroft, Myers Park) But some of them are very expensive. Also neighborhoods along Colony Road from South Park all the way to 51.

I'll be working mostly from home. So commute isn't an issue. Mint hill neighborhoods were beautiful but the surrounding areas seemed so rural and sparse, maybe we just didn't see enough of the town, not really sure. Are there any areas that have a cute Main Street area? We've also heard that Huntersville is nice, but we haven't seen it yet. Our budget wouldn't land us in the country club or dillworth but seems to apply to everything else. We are most interested in making a good decision on the area... Thanks everyone!

If having a cute downtown is on your list of wants, Ballantyne is definitely out. I would check out Matthews. They have a great downtown plus homes to fit all budgets.

Waxhaw also has a cute main street with homes to fit most budgets. If saving on state taxes is appealing, Baxter village in Fort Mill.

All the above have great schools as well.
