My wife had a friend down for the Thanksgiving holiday. She is not originally from NYC but lived there for around 30 years. She brought up, not sure why, that people in Charlotte still think the Civil War is going on. We told her that around half the people in the Charlotte area of most likely not originally from Charlotte or NC. I wonder if this attitude is pervasive among some New Yorkers? I have never heard someone mention that they were still fighting the Civil War.
Hmmmm....I've lived here 16 yrs and I don't recall a lot of Civil War talk....I definitely have not seen a lot of confederate flags as someone else has claimed.

I've seen the rebel flags aka confederate flags everywhere. Especially when I go down to Indian Land. But it doesn't bother me. And I do hear some civil war talk around the reenactments but nothing where it's a normal topic of conversation.
And I have never seen anyone have weapons strapped to them out in the open. That I never seen here.

Where? I live in Kings Mountain & see one at a house on the way to the battlefield in SC , just across the state line. I also see vehicles w/SC plates with Clemson flags. The stars & bars? I haven't seen one on NC cars in 6 years.

You see it from time to time in many areas, including Charlotte. In NC, open carry is perfectly legal even though some law enforcement and many civilians don't know it. In fact, there are several Open Carry Meet-ups every year around the area. You'll see a large group of people peacefully carrying a sidearm and going out to lunch or dinner and their families are along.
I have seen the occasional front license plate area with a confederate flag. Depending on how I go home, I see a house with a confederate flag but in my 6 years here I haven't seen a ton of confederate flags. I have never had someone talk or complain about the Civil War.
