Charlotte signed an agreement decades ago with the 6 other municipalities in the county that limit how much it can annex.

We will reach a million by the mid or late 2020s. We are currently sitting at 810k, and the county is already over 1 million people. Our CSA metro could also hit 3 million by the mid 2020s, and possibly 4 million by mid or late 2030s. But that also depends on what counties are added to our metro by the Census.

I was surprised at how small the Charlotte metro is in land area.

Metro Areas by Area in Square Miles(1,000+ square miles), 2000 Census

Again, old data, but it's interesting that some these metros...the ones with "huge" populations (over 3 million) also cover massives land areas, while others, with "huge" or even "large" (over 1 million) do not.

Compare Atlanta and Miami on the one hand...Roughly the same population in their metros but covering vastly different sized land areas or,

Compare Austin and Charlotte....roughly the same sized metros in population, but, contained in very different sized geographic areas.
