Visiting a friend for one night who is staying in a hotel near the University. That hotel (Country Inn and Suites, University Place) is a bit higher than I feel like paying for just a clean, safe place to stay (okay, I'm a cheapskate, I admit it).

Looking at Super 8 Charlotte University. I am unfamiliar with the area. Single woman, staying alone. The Super 8 gets wildly different ratings on TripAdvisor, and is seriously cheap, which makes me wonder what's going on there? I'm not the paranoid type and am well traveled, but also not stupid enough to not ask about this. Opinions

Also - Microtel at University Place, though not much cheaper than the Country Inn and Suites.

The only super 8 I know of is located off sugar creek & is a good 4 miles from the University plus there are are quite a few sketchy hotels used by a certain profession near it plus the neighborhood it's in is not somewhere I would want to be late at night.

Don't know much about the hotels themselves, but the Sugar Creek Rd area isn't that great, although you should be okay if you're basically just going there to sleep.

How close did you want to be to the Country Inn & Suites? The Super 8 is still about 10 minutes away from there, although looks like the Microtel is basically in the same parking lot. That area is better, although C-D does have it's fair share of University City bashers.

If you can get similar pricing, might be worth looking at the Concord area, which would be about 10-20 minutes away depending on what part of Concord, and most likely on your way if coming from Raleigh. Just taking a look at the Super 8 website and without knowing your dates, the one in Huntersville is in a better area and looks to have pretty good rates - that would be about 20 minutes to the Country Inn & Suites.

Thanks, everyone. I got the Microtel at $79 including taxes. I'm happy with that.
