I have lived in the Charlotte area on and off for more than 20 years. I recently met a graduate from Jackson Training School. That was the first time ever. I'm not sure if that diploma opened that any doors for him jobwise or not. I just remember my parents threatening to send me there or to a military school.

Most of the boys I knew that ended up at Jackson were there because of juvenile criminal behavior, or back in the day playing "hooky" more than the allowable days. I visited several of them that were sent to Jackson back in the late 70s.

As for Elon, it was well back in the woods, and I can understand if you didn't know where it was you would pass by it completely. I'm not sure I ever saw a sign and the driveway was devoid of buildings until well into the woods way behind the current Elementary school, possibly reaching back to where the Foxhole is currently.

Lots of people probably confused Elon with Eton, in England. They were identical except for the facilities and the admission requirements. Oh yea, the tuition was a bit higher at Eton and there was more snootiness. Just kidding.

Most of the kids I knew that ended up at Jackson Training School were the same types as you mentioned. Imagine how insane the place would be today compared to then. Today, violent thugs would probably be the main body of students instead of hooky players or committers of minor misdemeanors. I must admit that I can't remember hearing of Elon.
