If you are trying to transfer with your current company, do you know where your work location would be? As mentioned, you can find a SFH (a condo/townhouse will give you more options) on the outer edges of the metro (or even closer in where some may argue whether or not they're "safe"), but if your job is on the opposite side of the metro you won't want to make that commute. You may also want to take a look at the schools for those areas to see if they meet your definition of "good."
I'm coming from Knoxville and I'm looking to transfer with my company. I was sticking close to 900 because I'm not sure how much they will go up on my pay with the transfer, so my budget could potentially be higher. Hopefully they take that into consideration..

As others have said, housing costs will be your big difference. I have 2 kids at UT right now, so I know Knoxville pretty well and really like it there too. Need to know what part of town your company is located in here in order to give you a better idea of some housing options and locations.
What are some areas that I need to stay away from?
Depends on what you are used to. Usually you will hear Eastside like Idlewild/Ablemarle Rd/Farm Pond/Eastway/Eastland, Westside near Tuckaseegee/Freedom, parts of University(mostly South U City)Old Concord/ Derita/Rumple/Sugar Creek area,North has Beaties Ford/Berkshire, South has South Blvd/Yorkmont area. All directions have good and bad.
My company is pretty close to the University of North Carolina in Charlotte
So University City is large with good and bad. The better parts are Highland Creek, Propserity Church, Mallard Creek (north of WT Harris), and Eastfield Rd.
Yeah in general in the immediate University area the best areas are north of WT Harris and west of I-85. Not sure what you'd find in that price range in that area though. You might be able to find something decent elsewhere just check the crime stats online.
Concord would still be a possibility, but there are various different schools in Concord with mixed reviews. In general though for $150K/$900 you're not going to be in a top school district - again a condo/townhome will give you more options but if buying of course the HOA fee will likely be higher.
Gastonia could still be an option but the commute wouldn't be ideal. You'd want to stay in the eastern part for that reason, and generally the SE section seems to be the nicest anyway.
Another option could be Mooresville which actually will get you in pretty well-regarded schools. Commute again wouldn't be ideal but from the older part east of I-77 you would be able to avoid 77 at least going to the University area.
Check out the area along the East Charlotte / Mint Hill border near Independence High. There should be some townhomes and small single family homes in the Lebanon Road Elementary attendance area. It feeds into Independence High School. If you find the local neighborhood schools not to your liking, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools offers the most options in the area for School Choice and transferring to a magnet school or charter school. It is a 20-30 minute drive from Lebanon Rd. area to the UNCC area.
You have to consider your commute as you are coming from a small metro area to Charlotte with almost 2.5 million people and traffic can be a pain...you would not want to live on one side of town and commute to the other side of town. People do it but I don't understand that (lol). I personally would never consider Mooresville even though nice & good schools...but good luck with that I-77 nightmare going to work & returning. Consider Concord or Harrisburg or University City/Highland Creek area of Charlotte...the North of Harris Blvd...the West of I-85 the better. Gastonia is not close and way on the other side of the UNCC area. We lived in 4th Ward (Uptown) for 16 years and loved it..but schools are iffy & has become very expensive. Good luck!

Was watching the Lakers/Celtics 30 for 30 and was reminded of this thread. According to James Worthy, Gastonia was only 15 minutes from UNCC.
