My husband and I are thinking about relocating to Charlotte. I am originally from Charlotte and left over 10 years ago and so much as changed. We would be looking to buy a single family home, at least 3 bedrooms 2 baths for $325000 and under. We would want to be no more than 45 minutes to downtown max. Elementary schools would be important! We also need a home with some yard for our dog that we could fence in. I love craftsman (older or new construction) or older homes that have been renovated in a modern farm style kind of way. With this budget where would you recommend looking to buy a home?

For your price range and finding a home with character, I would recommend Belmont, NC.

602 Gaston Ave
121 N Central
605 N Central
are some older / historic homes

For new construction, they are doing "new craftsman" style at the Eage Park development in Belmont:

For new construction, you might also like Cameron Creek's Charleston Alley collection in the Tega Cay, South Carolina community.

There's a beautiful craftsman house on the market on North Piedmont in Kings Mountain, in one of the historic districts. The pro is it's one block from the library. The cons are that it's a one hour drive to Uptown (downtown) & in proximity to the train track. Not necessarily a pro or con, it's across the street from the Lutheran church, which runs a daycare & they have a carillion.

I'm not certain which elementary school it's assigned to. Two of the 3 elementary schools within the city limits have been designated as Blue Ribbon schools & the 3rd is not bad.

Sounds like Matthews or Indian Trial would be right up your alley.

45 minutes to downtown at the peak of rush hour (7:45-8:30am & ~5-6pm) or off-peak? It makes a big difference.

For me personally, I'd only buy in the portion staying in Hough High boundaries.

@UDcc123 off peak. We live in Atlanta now and DC before (two places with some of the worst traffic you have ever seen). So i know all about traffic and it kind of comes with the territory. What about concord? I saw this particular community online and it looks very nice, close to Lake Wylie.

You might want to use the search feature to read about the Palisade development. There are several threads on it. I don't think it would be a very fun commute to Uptown. 49 is very crowded and cannot handle the amount of traffic on it. You would have several bottlenecks to get through and it is 35 minutes without traffic, probably close to 50 minutes to an hour with traffic.

It is a very nice development for new construction (which typically looks like Walmart junk these days).

Thanks for the input @CLT4. I will definitely do a search. I agree the downfall about new construction is that it seems cheap and new houses are thrown up so quickly. On the other hand I can get a craftsman home exactly the way I like it where there is more compromise on style with an older home.
