Charlotte Observer | 03/30/2008 | Police identify 'hot spots' for crime (http://www.charlotte.com/109/story/558628.html - broken link)
Well, now that the police have publically identified these places I hope newcomers, especially those coming here who hope to spend under $700 a month in rent for a 2 bedroom apartment, will take heed. This story supports one thing I repeatedly tell folks when they ask about areas, any place with a high concentration of apartment complexes attracts criminals in this city. I HATE it, but this is what the reality is. RENTERS BEWARE!

Yes, and excellent advice it has been! I DL'd the PDF of the map showing those hotspots so I can use it for reference in the future.
I saw this article this morning. Very interesting and hopefully it WILL tell people who are thinking about or definitely moving to Charlotte where NOT to move to. Unfortunately, not everyone who moves here has the money to live in any of the more "desirable" and "low crime" areas. Even with less crime than Los Angeles, sometimes I think Charlotte will eventually turn into another Los Angeles with it's crime. Seems like Charlotte is seeing murders, home invasions, robberies and property theft on a daily basis now.
I also read that Charlotte is among the fastest growing cities in the U.S. Now, that is good and bad. Good, if there is enough jobs available (I've been looking since we got here in Oct. 07). Good, if the economy can grow from the population increase. Bad, for traffic unless there is money to put in more lanes on 77 and finish 485 to Concord. Bad, because there will be more crime. Growth always brings good and bad.
also read the information, don't just look at the map and say I can't live near that spot. Take #1, low on the violent crime, high on theft, why its a huge retail area. All this map shows is high call volume, not the highest crime areas. The information in the article is just as relevent as the map itself. You are right, high concentration of apts can lead to more crime, again in the theft area, because cars are left outside.
Another problem with crime, is that people sometimes leave things (in plain site) in their vehicles that they should not. Packages that should be put in a trunk. Then there are folks, like my former Supervisor in Colorado, who owned an older Jeep Cherokee. We worked in a building in an area where there were "bars" across the windows and doors......obviously a higher crime area. This was the first time that I had ever worked in an area like this. The only time I had seen "bars" across windows/doors was when I drove thru South Central Los Angeles. Anyway, while we were all in the building (offices) someone smashed his side window and yanked his stereo out of the dash. He had no alarm in the vehicle. He was so upset, he went into his office and was crying some at his desk. I "felt" for him, but why didn't he have an alarm in his vehicle......the stereo was an older one, didn't have the faceplate that came off. Then, after the insurance fixed the dash and replaced the stereo, he still didn't have an alarm installed or took the faceplate off of the new stereo when he left the Jeep. To me, he was just inviting more trouble.
A lot of people are so trustworthy and think, "Naw, it won't happen to me", then it happens and they say "Why me??".
I find it interesting that none of these hotspots are near Steele Creek, especially when, a few months ago, people were talking about all of the unsavory types to be found around Ayrsley.

I wonder if they are using the most recent data? I saw there were several holdups in arysley a month or two ago. I believe that gamestop right there has been robbed twice recently too. And that bi-low 1/2 mile north of there... they went from a security guard a few months ago to an armed guard and you are greeted with a friendly message when you walk through the door... "all activities are being monitored..." That whole retail area, you can find numerous suspicious vehicles there almost any time of day.
Most of the non-property crime in "steel creek" seems to be in the nations ford area... which is technically not steel creek but is covered by the steel creek police division.

BINGO!!!!!! I noticed that also. I want the facts, not opinions.
